Just had a wonderful day - drilling sea glass! I've made approx. 42 sea glass charms and this stunning emerald green sea glass and silver cluster necklace, available on an 18, 20, 22 or 24 inch chain. Hoping to make some more tomorrow with different colours of sea glass, browns, blues, whites etc.
Making sea glass in silver bezels this weekend - a lovely classic look for everyday and especially good on bare skin! I'll wait until I've made a few then they're off to Birmingham Assay Office to be hallmarked...
The celebration of wedding anniversaries dates back to Roman times when husbands gave their wives a silver wreath for 25 years of marriage, and a gold wreath for 50. Twentieth century commercialism then led to the addition of more gifts to represent names for other years. By the 1930's there was a material representing the year as a gift suggestion for the first year and milestone years such as 10th, 20th, 25th and 50th. Over the years more materials were added and the gift list updated and modernised by various American and British greeting card companies.
Ancient Bling: Exquisite Jewelry Found in Tomb of Chinese Woman
Around 1,500 years ago, at a time when China was divided, a woman named Farong was laid to rest wearing fantastic jewelry, which included a necklace of 5,000 beads and "exquisite" earrings, archaeologists report. Read full story here
We have beachcombed this tideline on scores of summer days but have only gone home with painted top shells (Calliostoma zyzyphinum) on a handful of occasions.
Of all the shells washed ashore here, this is the most desirable: a pointed yellow cone decorated with purple streaks. Stand it on its tip and it resembles a 1in tall replica of an old-fashioned spinning top. Read rest of article here
Is there a more dramatic journey in the north of England than across the causeway to Holy Island? The tide cuts the island off for a few hours each day – time it wrong and you're in for an extended stay...
Also known as Lindisfarne, the island was an early centre of Christianity, with a monastery first founded in the 7th century, which was later the source of the famous Lindisfarne Gospels – illuminated manuscripts that are possibly the high point of Celtic religious art. Read full article here
Searching through my sea glass collection I found some lovely little, smooth and frosty pieces of sea glass (very hard to find) and made charms with them. Drilled twice to get the correct size hole and fitted with a sterling silver jump ring - all links on the bracelet are soldered, so no more missing charms :) The pieces of sea glass are sea mist, white and seafoam in colour and go so well with the sterling silver. Beautiful alone or stunning when stacked!
I had a request from a customer for a sea glass bracelet, but as she had a metal allergy I couldn't use sterling silver for a clasp as I normally would. We got around this by making a wrap bracelet with faux suede. The piece of sea glass was drilled at either side then lovely soft faux suede was inserted through the holes, this was able to wrap around the wrist three times, tied in a knot and the ends tucked in - beautiful! My customer was absolutely delighted! This led me to making a necklace to match. I've made lovely long necklaces 30 inches long and instead of using a sterling silver clasp, I've used wood beads in co-ordinating colours, to close the necklace and it makes it fully adjustable. One happy customer said that she can wear it at different lengths for different tops!
The photos show some of the colours of faux suede I am using with co-ordinating beads, finished wrap bracelets (the ones in the photo have sterling silver fittings, but I can make them without for a reduced price) and a finished necklace. Hope you like them :) I will be listing more on my website, but if you would like me to make one for you please let me know.
